Contaminated Site Remediation with Genomics: Boosting Bioremediation in South America

20-28 October 2025, Valparaiso, Chile

MicrobEco dedicated the 15th edition of ICME-International Course in Microbial Ecology to BIOREMEDIATION, a set of technologies utilizing microorganisms to neutralize or degrade pollutants. The course has been funded by EMBO as Global practical course and by ISME for the support of South American participants. In Chile, environmental contamination is a significant issue, exacerbated by limited awareness and technological resources.

The EMBO practical course, “Contaminated Site Remediation with Genomics: Boosting Bioremediation in South America” aimed to train scientists in using molecular techniques for bioremediation. It has been hosted by Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and Universidad de Playa Ancha, offering practical activities on microbial metabolism, bioremediation strategies, and monitoring methods. Participants were engaged in field and laboratory activities, as well as bioinformatics sessions.

The course was designed for graduate students and professionals in Environmental Biotechnology, offering valuable hands-on experience and knowledge. A virtual roundtable will also facilitate discussions between scientific, public, and private sectors to promote collaboration on environmental challenges.
